3 Apps to Hit Your Reading Goals This Year

Written by:

Now that we’re pretty well into January, are you struggling with any of your resolutions? That’s normal and totally OK. You don’t have to be perfect with your goals, and I think it’s a good thing to stumble along the way. When you figure out what doesn’t work, you have more room to focus on the things that facilitate your best path in life.

If one of your resolutions was to read more and you headed out to the bookstore bright and early on New Year’s Day, you might be questioning your commitment. While I love a brand new book in my hands as much as the next person, I am not the biggest fan of the associated price tag.

If you need a little more encouragement to keep reading, try one of these apps to keep things going.

OverDrive

Guys, this app is my favorite thing in the whole wide world — free. The OverDrive app lets you read eBooks, listen to audiobooks, and watch TV shows and movies all from your phone. All you need is a library card and you can check out these items through the app.

  • Pros: Free, easy to use, large variety, can renew items.
  • Cons: Some items have wait lists, you cannot renew waitlisted items.

Audible

You may have already heard of Audible. Owned by Amazon, it’s a bit hard to miss this insanely popular audiobook app. I absolutely love Audible, and here’s why. My husband and I have a Platinum Monthly membership (sounds fancy, right?), which gets us two audiobooks a month for $22.95. We each get one book a month, and listen during our morning and evening commutes.

Admittedly, I’m extremely picky when it comes to the narrator’s voice, so I sometimes buy an audiobook only to realize there is no way I’m listening to this person for 14 hours. Audible makes it easy to return audiobooks you don’t want, and you’ll receive your credit back so you can find one you truly love.

  • Pros: Easy to use, large variety, keep your books forever.
  • Cons: Monthly fee.

Goodreads

Another free app, Goodreads also has a regular website. So what is it? It’s like social media, but

for book lovers. You can create virtual shelves of books you have already read, what you’re currently reading, and what’s up next on your to-read list.

Best of all, you can use the app to set a reading goal for the year. Use this as a motivational tool to meet that resolution you set for yourself!

Finding the time to read usually ends up being harder than we expect, but there are solutions. Try out these apps and see if 2019 is your year for reading!
