America, the Mean Girl

Written by:

You know the Mean Girl…the one who makes nasty comments and makes you feel like if you go against her, you’re a total loser who doesn’t deserve to breathe the same fresh air she breathes? She’s the girl you love to hate: she seems to have it all and you want to like her but her personality just gets in the way. Do you know someone like that? I do. It’s America.

Just two short years ago, Gold Medalist Gabby Douglass was America’s BFF. Her historic gold medal wins earned her a special seat at the lunch table: her endorsement deals have earned her approximately three million dollars and we got to spend time with her as she made her rounds on the media circuit, including a movie about her life. Alas, all good things come to an end. She disappointed America when she wouldn’t put her hand over her heart during the National Anthem and true to form, America the Mean Girl turned on her like a rabid animal. She went from being America’s BFF to America’s target for criticism. By the end of the Olympics, America pushed aside the fact that Gabby is a gold medalist and instead focused on her hair. Yep, that’s what Mean Girls do.

In my opinion, the Gabby Douglas of the holistic community is Wellness Mama. In a link you can find by searching her site, she describes a mattress she bought–one that is a healthier alternative to the commercial mattresses we buy willy nilly today. Sometime after her original post, she posted a new article regarding an even healthier version of a mattress to sleep on. I recall many readers pouncing on the fact that she changed her mind. One reader even wrote something to the effect of, “You’ve gone from ‘Wellness Mama’ to ‘Wellne$$ Mama'”. I find that totally unfair, yet she was pounced on by the Mean Girls, all over the web, from all different states.

First of all, a country that would seriously consider endorsing Donald Trump to be our next President should not be allowed to have such strong opinions about what our physical stance should be during the National Anthem. Also, since when are we not allowed to change our minds?? Isn’t that what America is supposed to about in the first place? A country where every individual is allowed to have an opinion that may or may not change over time??

Listen America, I want to love you, I really do. But sometimes you make it hard. I can’t follow you around blindly as if I don’t have a mind of my own. Sometimes, we are going to disagree. I may not always agree with your ideas, but let’s try to remain friends and move forward. Just be nice. Please, America…“I wish we could all get along like we used to in middle school. I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy.”
