The recent success of the movie “A Star is Born” has captivated audiences around the world. It’s the fourth version of a movie that originally debuted in 1937. The chemistry between the two lead characters, country singer Jackson and pop music newcomer Ally, amplified the tragic love story. (I won’t give too much more information about the plot in case you haven’t seen it – if you like movies at all, go see it NOW.) However, this undeniable chemistry is getting people talking. Many people think that the stars, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are also lovers off-screen. Though it’s certainly possible, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the two wound up together at some point in their lives, I am taking a stand and saying no – Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are most definitely not having an affair.
Assemble the Clues
First, let’s look at the evidence that people are pointing to that support the idea that Cooper and Gaga have gone gaga for one another. The rumors really started picking up steam earlier this year. That was when Cooper surprised an audience at Lady Gaga’s Las Vegas show, joining her in singing the hit that just won an Oscar for Best Original Song. People saw Gaga crouched onstage, in front of Cooper’s knee, looking up at him adoringly and decided it could only mean one thing – the horizontal mambo.
People have also accused Lady Gaga of talking about “nothing else” during interviews but Bradley Cooper. I’m sure that’s totally because they’re in love and not because she’s been promoting the movie they starred in together that was up for numerous awards. What would have been GREAT promotion for the movie would have been for her to squint and say “Bradley Cooper? Never heard of him.”
They’re Playing Us All
All joking aside, this leads me to my main point. It’s something I realized when I became an actor myself. Though I’ve never been chased down by paparazzi or had fans scrutinizing my every move, I have been gaining more knowledge about what it means to be a performer with a project to promote. So, here’s a secret that every Hollywood publicist would kill me for telling you:
Stars will lean into rumors or even generate them for publicity.
I honestly believe that Gaga and Cooper crafted all of this. Or, their teams did. Even if they haven’t read what people are saying online, you can bet their publicists have.
There’s a saying attributed to various historic celebrities – “I don’t care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right.” To a certain extent, that is true. Staying in the public eye translates into dollars for celebrities. Think about when one of your favorite stars has a project coming out – suddenly they are EVERYWHERE on every talk show you have heard of and some you haven’t. What better way for the stars of “A Star is Born” to keep the momentum going with their movie than by letting people believe they’re having an affair?
I hear some of you out there. “But, but…Lady Gaga and her fiancé just broke up!” That they did. Her ex, Christian Carino, was also her talent agent. Though I don’t think Gaga and Cooper were having an affair, perhaps he couldn’t deal with the rampant speculation about it. Cooper is still with his girlfriend and mother of his child, model Irina Shayk. After Gaga and Cooper’s steamy performance of “Shallow” at this year’s Oscars, with Shayk just a few rows away, you think she’d put up with him cheating on her if she wasn’t in on the whole thing? She’s a supermodel! She can walk to get the mail and probably get no less than five marriage proposals!
All this to say, if Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are anything more than friends off-screen, I’ll be shocked. Don’t forget that both of these people are also ACTORS. If they can’t fool us into thinking they’re actually in love in real life, how are we supposed to buy in to their amazing relationship on the silver screen? Unless the story would be truly detrimental to their career, always take celebrity rumors with a grain of salt.
