Reasonable or Irrational: Part 2

Written by:

In the last article, I briefly discussed atheism and its inability to give reasonable answers to life’s questions.  As stated before, atheism cannot explain how the universe came into existence, how life began, why we are here, where we came from, what is the basis for morality, and what is our destiny.  Atheism answers none of these questions, and yet, Darwinists like Richard Dawkins says that Christians are stupid for believing in an all-powerful, eternal God who created everything.  It is important to note that not all skeptics believe as Richard Dawkins.  One of the world’s leading physicists, David Berlinski, who is himself an agnostic, took exception with Dawkins’ book The God Delusion and wrote his book The Devil’s Delusion.  Berlinski penned the following:

Has anyone provided a proof of God’s inexistence?  Not even close.  Has quantum cosmology explained the emergence of the universe or why it is here?  Not even close.  Have the sciences explained why our universe seems to be fine-tuned to allow for the existence of life?  Not even close.  Are physicists and biologists willing to believe in anything so long as it is not religious thought?  Close enough.  Has rationalism in moral thought provided us with an understanding of what is good, what is right, and what is moral?  Not close enough.  Has secularism in the terrible twentieth century been a force for good?  Not even close to being close.  Is there a narrow and oppressive orthodoxy of thought and opinion within the sciences?  Close enough.  Does anything in the sciences or in their philosophy justify the claim that religious belief is irrational?  Not even ballpark.  Is scientific atheism a frivolous exercise in intellectual contempt?  Dead on.

This is what Berlinski who is an agnostic who borders on atheism stated!  Other scientists, who are not theists, have also conceded the truth of the Scriptures in what they have found in their scientific inquiries.  The Physicist and Cosmologist Robert Jastrow stated in an interview with Christianity Today in 1982, “Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth, and they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover. That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.”  Robert Jastrow also stated the following in his book God and the Astronomers: “For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance, he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.”

Arno Penzias, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 for his co-discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation, which helped to establish the Big Bang, is another important scientist to mention.  He stated, “The best data we have [concerning the Big Bang] are exactly what I would have predicted had I nothing to go on but the five books of Moses, the Psalms, and the Bible as a whole.” The men mentioned above are leading physicists and one a Nobel Laureate.  Their views have only helped to establish the truth of God’s word, though they themselves are not believers, with the possible exception of Penzias.  In our next article, we will examine what the Scriptures teach concerning the four questions of life, as well as scientific truths.
