A few days ago, Hot Mess reported that the GOP vote on healthcare had been delayed due to a blood clot in Republican Senator John McCain’s left eye. Mitch McConnell made the announcement last Saturday night before the scheduled vote on the Better Care Act. Although some are saying that without McCain’s vote, the bill could be in trouble, McCain had already expressed his displeasure with the replacement for ObamaCare. The bill needs 50 of 52 votes in order to pass.
Sadly, according to the New York Times, the blood clot in McCain’s eye was found to be a symptom of a much bigger health issue. The 80-year-old has been diagnosed with one of the worst forms of brain cancer, glioblastoma. Along with being known as among the most dangerous, it is also one of the most common forms of the disease, and sadly known to be highly malignant. According to medical experts, even though this type of cancer responds well to radiation and chemotherapy, it usually comes back after treatment.
The Arizona Senator’s office issued a statement saying that he is staying at home during his recuperation, and is said to be very appreciative of the love and support being sent his way. McCain is currently consulting with his medical team to decide when he should return to work at the Senate. Despite the seriousness of his diagnosis, he is said to be recovering from the surgery quite well.
Glioblastoma is the same type of tumor that took the life of Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 2009. It is said to be an aggressive form of cancer, with a median survival rate of 16 months. McCain was told that he had this type of tumor just after this week’s surgery to remove the blood clot from his eye. That procedure took place at the Mayo Clinic Hospital located in Phoenix, Arizona.
McCain received well-wishes from four United States presidents, namely George Bush Senior, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. McCain comes from a military background with family that has served the United States since the 1960s. He was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and campaigned to fight against the mistreatment of American soldiers there. Although he failed in his run for president in 2000, he has been elected to the Senate six times.
McCain has been known for standing up against both the Republican Party and the Democrats when he did not agree with their perspective ideas. Despite this, he is known to be quite popular in the Senate. After his diagnosis on Wednesday, several lawmakers gathered to pray for him in the Dirkdsen Senate Office Building. The prayer was led by Oklahoma Republican Senator James Lankford, a Baptist preacher.
