Singer Proves There Is No Erasing His Voice

Written by:

For those who grew up in the 80’s, music was a rich tapestry with a wide variety of genres that could appeal to any music lover. There were several bands that rose to the top during this time, and out of all of them, few were as beloved or iconic as the rock band, Journey. They were fronted by a charismatic and talented vocalist who was dubbed “The Voice” by admirers around the world. However, at the top of his game, with the band poised to become even more successful than they were, Steve Perry walked away.

For years, fans waited and wondered if Perry would return with a new band or possibly with a new solo effort. Journey members auditioned and hired a succession of singers, trying to recapture the feeling and sound that only Perry himself could provide. Eventually they settled on a substitute frontman who could mimic Perry’s sound well enough to provide a vehicle for the band to continue touring even today. But for fans worldwide, Perry’s absence was felt and mourned for more than two decades.

About a year ago, there were whispers of a new album that would be forth coming at some point. There was no official word, and fans were waiting breathlessly and hopefully to see if the rumors were true. Finally, in June of this year, the fan pages were buzzing that there was a new album and it would be released in the fall. Along with the announcement, stories about where the singer had been for the past 24 years began to slowly leak out. The stories spoke of an intense love story and profound loss that finally drove Perry out of seclusion and back into the waiting arms of his fans.

The first single was released in August and was received with overwhelming gratitude and praise from fans and critic alike. Steve Perry then set out on a whirlwind radio and television tour to explain his absence, share his heartache and promote his new music. For fans, such as myself, hearing Perry’s voice again was like wrapping oneself in every warm and comforting memory that ever existed. Steve had not lost a beat. His voice and charm remained intact. It is possible the years only added a depth and maturity to both is voice and his writing that bespoke clearly of his re-awakened love for music and melody.

Steve Perry’s new album is a testament to what love and hope as well as death and loss can bring to a soul. Perry himself said that in order to truly love, one’s heart must be broken first. Over the years in the music business, Perry has ridden the heights of popularity and fame and sunk under the waves of betrayal and deep loss. Through it all, his voice has been a beacon that draws both new and old fans alike. He has proven that there is “No Erasin'” his gift and his contribution to the music world.
